Well, it's just past midnight and I'm bored...so I read an article on the Armageddon farce that has taken place and a question popped into my head... Has the WWE shot themselves in the foot once more?
How? Let's look at it this way. This weekend, Armageddon will become the first WWE PPV presentation not to have been broadcast in anyway, shape or form on UK TV in 6 years. (In Your House 16 - Final Four in February 1997 was the last PPV not to be shown in the UK). This all came about because Channel 4, who previously had rights to WWF Heat and 4 PPVs, dropped them in 2002, right when wrestling was hitting a major downer. Ch4 is credited with aiding the WWF's popularity during it's last major UK boom period...Backlash 2000 - WM X-7. The former of which was broadcast on Ch4. Channel 4 dropped rights to Heat, which earlier this year was picked up by Sky, and 4 PPVs: Royal Rumble, Backlash, Vengeance & Armageddon. Sky intervined when it looked like the Royal Rumble 2002 would not be shown, and have shown each of the 4 PPVs since then...until now.
Sky have the rights to show RAW, SmackDown, Velocity, Afterburn, Bottom Line, Classics and Heat until 2005, plus the 8 PPVs they picked up when the deals were last negociated in late '99-early 2000.
This Armageddon farce comes about at a time when The Wrestling Channel is nearing launch. The wrestling channel is based out of London, but with offices in Dublin, providing a real alternative to the WWE. Including NWA-TNA, CZW, UPW, RoH and FWA. Has the WWE timed this completely wrong? Will these other promotions gain anything out of this? Answer to both questions and this whole rant is... Yes...big time
