Orlando Orioles Take Over NHL (My NHL 04 Dynasty)

*Note: I tried to come up with a storyline to explain how this custom team came about. They are basically a bunch of created players, some of whom you know. If I put you in a different position to what you would have liked, I apologise, but it's only harmless fun and no doubt it will be an interesting tale*

The Detroit Red Wings were a team riding high. Although they had been swept in the Stanley Cup QFs by the Mighty Ducks, the team were still pretty confident. On a summer trip to Russia, they fell so in love with the place, they decided to stay in Russia to play hockey. Their decision was criticsed by both the Detroit team owners Michael and Marian Illitch and by NHL Comissioner Gary 'I Know Nothing' Bettman.

Illitch was stuck. Does he stick with the franchise which has been around for over 80 years, or does he sign a bunch of rookies? He does neither.
Instead, on August 2nd, in one of the biggest shocks in the history of hockey Illitch announces he is selling the team to some property entrepreneurs in Orlando, Florida. The NHL is struggling with division alignment, so Bettman decides to stick Orlando in the Central Division, taking the Wings' place. Illitch announces that the team name and logo is going to Russia and he will have a stake in the new team, called the Orlando Orioles (un-original I know...but I wanted a little alliteration).

It is announced the following day that the Owners had hired a rookie GM, Rhys Edwards from Bridgend, Wales, UK. Hockey analyists were laughing as they predicted the team to turn into the old Mighty Ducks...they were gonna suck. Edwards however was a smart man and made a lot of smart moves. During this announcement, it was confirmed that the Orioles will play at the TD Waterhouse Centre, although it will have it's old Monkier of the 'O-Rena' returned.

The uniforms would be 'stock' ones. The home jersey was that of the New Jersey Devils (red) and the road jersey was the St. Louis Blues (white/blue), except with the Orioles logo on it. (I can't find the actual logo, so in my match reports, I will use the new Columbus Blue Jackets Third Jersey logo...as the game was released prior to the jersey unvailing).

------------------------------------------

Here is my starting roster:
The people I have signed since I started are listed in Bold.

LW: M Alexander (Minors), A Davies (Minors), L Fox, T McFarlane, S Berezin, M Orpin, K Koltsov

C: R Reed, J Davies, R Edwards, K Winston, A Hawke (Minors)

3.      RW Andy Radke                        (1 goal, 0 assist)

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:
The first period was extremely scruffy to begin with. The Blue Jackets maintained possession of the puck for most of it, and they sent plenty of shots at Oriole’s tender Traux. The Orioles were first to score, Job-Smith scoring followed by Ott 4 minutes later.
SCORERS: Nathaniel Job-Smith (14:49), Stephan Ott (18:44)

2nd Period:
Like the first, the Blue Jackets dominated the first 10 or so minutes with good passing and twice hit the post. The Orioles, who lead the league in penalty kill, then scored a Powerplay goal through defenseman Ben Shottle, who is proving a valueable asset to the team. Andy Radke added a scrappy goal from the slot to give the Orioles a 0-4 into the 3rd period.
During this period, the Blue Jackets sent out Fred Braithwaite in place of Pascal LeClaire. Rhys Reed also won a scrap with Richardson.
SCORERS: Ben Shottle (11:37), Andy Radke (15:35)

3rd Period:
There was a lot of powerplays in this final period, but neither team capitalised on them. The Orioles did however add to their lead with Luke Fox scoring with less than 45 seconds left and Alexander Jeffers added more misery to the Blue Jackets with a goal with 16 seconds left.
SCORERS: Luke Fox (19:26), Alexander Jeffers (19:44)

GM Notes:
I was happy with the team’s performance on the ice tonight. Our offence was lacking a little, but first choice LW Mark Orpin is out injured for quite a white as he was injured in the Chicago OTL. Our defence is superb, although the 3rd line of Farmer and Coleman were playing a little slow tonight. The Blue Jackets play a return game tomorrow and we are playing at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus. We will enter as underdogs as the Blue Jackets are unbeaten at home.

2.      RW Kyle Winston                        (2 goals, 0 assist)
3.      C Rhys Edwards                        (1 goal, 0 assist)

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

The entire period was very back and fourth. There was a lot of endless passing and deking and both teams tried to out do each other. Traux stopped 9 shots in the first period but Freddie Braithwaite was on song stopping all 12 of the Orioles’ shots. For the first time in Orioles franchise history, the ended the first period in a tie.
SCORERS: None

2nd Period:
At last some goal scoring action. Orioles Captain and GM Namesake Rhys Edwards scored a wrist shot from just outside the blue line. Kyle Winston, who is on the much criticised Orioles 3rd Line, scored a scrappy deflected goal from outside the slot then Andy Radke scored from some way out, drilling it through Braithwaite’s leg to make it 3.
SCORERS: Rhys Edwards (7:30), Kyle Winston (17:51), Andy Radke (19:17)

3rd Period:
There was very little action in the third period, with Columbus just playing for pride. Winston added to their misery when he scored an absolute beauty from the blue line. Braithwaite was pulled and Pascal LeClaire returned to the net. With 59 seconds left, Orioles Defenseman Ben Shottle began a move from inside his own end and undressed the entire Columbus team before scoring a cracking goal! (Remember THAT goal in the Edmonton vs. Dallas Game 3 in the Playoffs last year? It was almost exactly like that).
SCORERS: Kyle Winston (8:16), Ben Shottle [PP] (19:01)

GM Notes:
Hoorah! The 3rd line answered my critics with a splendid performance, which they deserve to be proud of. The first line was lacking a little something tonight, but I hope the first line of McFarlane-Edwards-Ott does a good job in our next game. The next game is a road trip to Minnesota, who are flying high in the West and have had an amazing start to the season.

3.      GK Adam Taylor                        (23 Saves)

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:
Like in the last game, the goalies dominated the first period, with stand-in Orioles goalie stopping 9 shots and Dwayne Roloson stopped 10 Oriole shots.
SCORERS: None

2nd Period:
The first goal was an Orioles one. Rhys Reed blasts one from the right handside boards. Radke then scored a cracker from the left hand-side boards whilst Shorthanded. Alexander Jeffers capitalised on a sleepy defence when he one-timed Kyle Winston’s saucer pass to make it 3. Elliott Lugg then hit a stunning backhand from the right hand-side boards to make it 4-0 at the break. Taylor was equally impressive in a quiet period stopping 7 shots.
SCORERS: Rhys Reed (7:27), Andy Radke [SHG] (10:47), Alexander Jeffers [PP] (12:14), Elliott Lugg [SHG] (17:42)

3rd Period:
Rhys Reed slapped the Orioles into a 5-0 lead after a huge slapper from the inboards. Reed then got in a fight with Hannula which was broken up before there was a winner. Edwards then capped a great game for him when he scored a backhand from the slot. And 5 seconds later, after the Wild switched goalies, Kyle Winston scored a beautiful slap shot and it was game over.
SCORERS: Rhys Reed (6:49), Rhys Edwards (19:13), Kyle Winston (19:18)

GM Notes:
Finally the franchise has clicked after 18 games and the team is working magnificently. All 4 lines are working well and even out back-up goalie had a shut out. Our road trip is at a close and our next 4 games are at home, starting with a visit from the Washington Capitals.

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

This game was over before it even began. The Orioles ended their first period drought (as they scored no first period goals in their last 2 games) with 5 goals, 4 of which were inside the first 5 minutes. Stephan Ott opened the scoring with an SHG off Andy Radke's pass on 2:36. Less than 30 seconds later, Kyle Winston scored another SHG on 3:13. Ollie Kolzig in the Capitals goal was looking uncomfortable. His position looked even more at risk when on 3:51; Ben Shottle drilled an Andy Radke-like shot through his legs off a Rhys Edwards pass to make it 3-0. Kolzig was pulled out of the game and replaced by Charpentier after Luke Fox scored on 4:45 with an assist off Fredrik Coleman and Joshua Blanche. Aled Reed, brother of Rhys, then made his mark with a beautiful goal on 13:41 past new tender Charpentier.
SCORERS: Stephan Ott, [Andy Radke], (SHG) 2:36; Kyle Winston, [Unassisted], (PP) 3:13; Ben Shottle, [Rhys Edwards], 3:51; Luke Fox, [Fredrik Coleman, Joshua Blanche], (PP), 4:45; Aled Reed, [Shane Farmer], 13:41
PENALTIES: Orioles – Alexander Jeffers, roughing 2:11; Shane Farmer, roughing, 5:13
Capitals – Konowalcuk, cross checking 3:26; Zubarus, roughing 5:40; Miller, roughing 16:59; Podoknicy, roughing 18:05

2nd Period:
This period didn’t start too well either for the Capitals. The Orioles were on a high inside the O-Rena and had a point to prove after criticism in the Orlando Sentinel that the team were playing badly and other team’s misfortunes have led to huge wins. Stephan Ott scored his 2nd goal of the night on the powerplay. Elliott 'The Slug' Lugg then added more misery with another goal on the PP with 5:21 gone. Orioles Captain Rhys Edwards then finished a move from the Orioles end to make it 8-0 at the 2nd intermission.
SCORERS: Stephan Ott, [Joshua Blanche, Nathaniel Job-Smith], 4:27; Elliott Lugg, [Stephan Ott], (PP) 5:21; Rhys Edwards, [Unassisted], 14:31
PENALTIES: Capitals – Doig, hooking 3:58; Lang, hooking 4:38

3rd Period:
The Orioles again went out and showed why they are top of the NHL after 21 games. Edwards scored his 26th goal of the campaign so far with assists of his buddy Job-Smith and the ever reliable Josh Blanche. Job-Smith then capped a great game for himself when he slotted one past Charpentier with half the period gone. This period was penalty free.
SCORERS: Rhys Edwards [Nathaniel Job-Smith, Joshua Blanche], 4:56; Nathaniel Job-Smith, [Luke Fox, Fredrik Coleman], 11:15
PENALTIES: None

GM Notes:
Do I need to say anything? We went out there and showed to everyone that no matter what the local press says, we can win games, and not just win games, win them convincingly. Kolzig was definitely on a major cold streak and it showed. Charpentier was not bad, but could have done better. The next game is another home game, this time against the Edmonton Oilers, who are doing reasonably well in the Western Confrence.

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

The match opened up very aggressively, with Brewer getting a hooking penalty inside the opening 90 seconds. Andy Radke then scored a trademark powerplay goal soon after and the Orioles were 1-0. 5 minutes later, latest free agent signing Sekeras aided Radke to score his second goal of the period.
SCORERS: Andy Radke, [Todd McFarlene] (PP) 2:20; Andy Radke (2) [L. Sekeras, Joshua Blanche] 7:07
PENALTIES: EDM – M. Brewer, hooking 1:26

2nd Period:
Andy Radke opened up the period the way he started the first, with a goal. Radke slotted an unassisted goal past Valliquette to score the first Natural Hat-trick in Orioles Franchise History. He also collected a cheque for $2,500 for being the first player to do so. Alexander Jeffers aided the cause of the Orioles when he scored a goal with 7:27 to play.
SCORERS: Andy Radke (3) [Unassisted] 2:05; Alexander Jeffers [Jason Davies] 12:33
PENALTIES: ORL – Shane Farmer, fighting 12:00
EDM – M. Brewer, fighting 12:00

3rd Period:
The 3rd period was a very quiet one until right at the end 2 goals came in the space of 30 seconds.  Edmonton scored with 50 seconds to play through Rita with an assist off Brewer. Rhys Reed however spoiled a possible Edmonton rout when he scored off an Elliott Lugg pass with less than 30 seconds to play.
SCORERS: J. Rita [M. Brewer] 19:10; Rhys Reed [Jeremy Traux, Elliott Lugg] 19:31

GM Notes:
D L. Sekeras signs $2M, 3yr deal prior to game.
It looked scary in the final period, with Edmonton throwing everything they had at us, but we came through with a decent win against a quite lowly ranked team. Edmonton could cause a real upset this year. I’m also thinking of trading someone to get an LW, as we are a little short on quality ones. I have my eye on Paul Kariya of the Avalanche, but who can I afford to send over in his place…hmm…

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

This was by far the craziest match in the Oriole’s history thus far. The Islanders scored first and lead 3-2 going into the second period.
SCORERS: A. Yashin 2:16; K. Jonsson (M. Peca) 10:43; Eloronta (Peca) 14:49

PENALTIES: NYI – M. Parrish, hooking 20:00

2nd Period:
Sanity was restored…perhaps. The Orioles slotted 7 goals past the Islanders in the period, seeing Aled Davies, in his first start after being called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins (he replaced Todd McFarlene, who had the flu), scoring and Rhys Edwards scoring a hat-trick,
SCORERS: Rhys Edwards [Adam Taylor] (PP) 0:32; Rhys Reed [Elliott Lugg] 3:31; Kyle Winston [Elliott Lugg, Adam Taylor] (SHG) 6:41, Rhys Edwards (2) [Nathaniel Job-Smith, Adam Taylor] 13:26; Nathaniel Job-Smith [Andy Radke] 14:25; Aled Davies [Rhys Edwards, Stephan Ott] 14:45, Rhys Edwards (3) 15:06

3rd Period:
Quiet period for both teams, which came alight in the close, when Edwards slotted his 4th goal and Job-Smith scored his second.
SCORERS: Rhys Edwards (4) [Stephan Ott] 19:15; Nathaniel Job-Smith [Elliott Lugg] 19:41

GM Notes:
This was the most insane game I have ever played. We were poor in defence tonight and although Taylor will not get full responsibility for his efforts, I feel he is not #1 calibre. He is probably going to be used as bait for an LW. The Strike Force (First Line) were working fine, and St. Louis in our next game certainly looks interesting.

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

St. Louis stunned the Orioles in the opening 2 minutes when Boguniecki slotted a goal past Traux in the Orioles net to send the home fans in a frenzy. For most of the period, the Orioles were sending everything they got and were failing. Until with 5 left, Orioles Captain Rhys Edwards danced around the STL defence to score a beautiful goal. Kyle Winston added a second goal a minute later and the home crowd were silenced as The Orioles had done it with 5 minutes to spare. The period ended with the Orioles looking remarkably confident.
SCORERS: E. Boguniecki [Unassisted] 1:16
Rhys Edwards [Paul Kariya, Stephan Ott] 14:56; Kyle Winston [Luke Fox] 15:56
PENALTIES: ORL – Jamie Langenbrunner, elbowing 3:29

2nd Period:
The second period was quiet in goal and penalty terms, as there were no goals and penalties in the period. This didn’t stop the action. The Blues hit the post twice and Traux made a spectacular save off a Keith Tkachuk slapshot from the slot.

3rd Period:
The Blues went out and played a tough, hard-checking period, pulling Osgood in the last 10 seconds to see if they could score. The game however, looked sealed when Alexander Jeffers upped his tally and scored with 11+ minutes to play.
SCORERS: Alexander Jeffers [Unassisted] 7:34

GM Notes:
GK Adam Taylor & LW Michael Alexander traded to Colorado for LW Paul Kariya prior to game.

Why was Taylor traded? I feel confident with Traux and Whelan as a back-up. The Avs needed a tender after the retirement of Roy, and I felt Taylor could cope. Chris Simon, a 27-year old was signed and he was sent to Grand Rapids to see if he could improve. I believe we are close to possibly upgrading our facilities.
Our next game is at home, to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. They have had a dreadful start, 28th in the league with only Calgary and Buffalo possessing worse records. Easy pickings I’d say.

MATCH REPORT
1st Period:

The Orioles played poorly in the first five minutes, but an Alexander Jeffers hooking penalty sent out the best Penalty Kill in the NHL. The PK Line scored 4 SHGs in just over a minute and drove last years Conn Smythe Trophy winner J-S Gigure from the net. Edwards and Blanche added 2 more to already seal the game in the first period.
SCORERS: Andy Radke [Elliott Lugg, Fredrik Coleman] (SHG), 6:39; Kyle Winston [Ben Shottle] (SHG), 6:46; Ben Shottle [Kyle Winston] (SHG), 6:51; Stephan Ott [Unassisted] (SHG), 7:48; Rhys Edwards [Unassisted], 10:29; Joshua Blanche [Unassisted] 14:53
PENALTIES: ORL – Alexander Jeffers, 2-minute minor, hooking 6:13

2nd Period:
The 2nd period was much like the first. The Orioles played poorly, with Sergei Federov hitting the crossbar twice, but a penalty sent the PK Line out, with Stephan Ott adding his second of the evening. Edwards added to an already impressive tally for a rookie of 30 goals with another spectacular effort.
SCORERS: Stephan Ott (2) [Unassisted] (SHG), 12:44; Rhys Edwards (2) [Elliott Lugg, Luke Fox], 15:01
PENALTIES: ORL – Luke Fox, 2-minute minor, holding 12:13

3rd Period:
The Orioles played their very best hockey in the 3rd, although the Ducks did finally pull one back through Federov. The Orioles fans in the crowd cheered through out the third as the team scored 4 more goals to take their total to 12.
SCORERS: Alexander Jeffers [Stephan Ott, Jeremy Traux], 3:02; Luke Fox [Fredrik Coleman, Shane Farmer], 4:00; Rhys Reed [Alexander Jeffers, Paul Kariya], 6:56; Andy Radke (2) [Unassisted], 15:07

GM Notes:
What needs to be said? The Ducks played badly, which is good for them, and we played at our best, giving them a right old thumping. Even without a first-choice LW in Mark Orpin, the franchise is showing real grit and the playoffs doesn’t look a far off possibility. Andy Radke is the franchise. He always plays to his full potential and getting the franchises first Natural Hat-trick shows he has real talent. The ‘Sanity’ Line of Radke-Edwards-Ott showed their true dominance tonight.
The next game is an interesting home tie with the St. Louis Blues, who played a good game last time.

MATCH REPORT

1st Period:

The game was not very open in the early-going. Whelan, who was between the pipes in place of Jeremy Traux, who was rested, began well, but his defence let him down on occasion. A break-through came when Josh Blanche was handed a roughing penalty. This sent the best penalty kill in the NHL out. 2 SHGs later and the worrying was gone...almost. Jani Heerema sneaked a powerplay goal in whilst the penalty was still on to ensure St. Louis entered Period 2 with some confidence.
SCORERS: Kyle Winston [Unassisted] (SHG) 7:25; Rhys Edwards [Ben Shottle, Joe Whelan] (SHG) 7:50;
Jani Heerema [P. Demetra, E. Boguniecki] (PP) 8:22
PENALTIES: ORL – Joshua Blanche, 2-minute minor, roughing 7:18

2nd Period:
The scoring, which lacked in the first period, picked up in a huge way in the second period. Mistakes by both tenders on judging some shots made the forwards come in for the kill. The Orioles managed to dominate the whole period, offensively and defensively, until the final 2 minutes when St. Louis managed to score 2 even strength goals, something rare indeed against an Orioles line-up.
SCORERS: Josh Blanche [Elliott Lugg] 2:38; Rhys Edwards (2) [Joe Whelan] (PP) 4:34; Rhys Reed [Nathaniel Job-Smith, Elliott Lugg] 12:37; Andy Radke [Joe Whelan] (SHG) 16:44
L Pirjeta [Unassisted] 18:12; Dallas Drake [L Pirjeta] 19:24
PENALTIES: ORL – Shane Farmer, 5-minute major, fighting 12:09
Josh Blanche, 2-minute minor, elbowing 14:51
STL – Eric Boguniecki, 2-minute minor, hooking 3:34
Barret Jackman, 5-minute major, fighting 12:09

3rd Period:
The Orioles continued to show that the third period is when they pick up the pace and prove themselves as worthy Stanley Cup contenders. The game was very aggressive, particularly in the 3rd, when Lugg and Pronger dropped the gloves and settled a few arguments. Lugg put up a spirited fight, but lost on this occasion, although he will be back for more when the teams play next.
SCORERS: Rhys Reed (2) [Josh Blanche] 2:14; Andy Radke [Elliott Lugg] (PP) 14:40, Nathaniel Job-Smith [Josh Blanche, Rhys Reed] 19:12
Jani Heerema (2) [Alexander Khavanov] 10:44
PENALTIES: ORL – Jamie Langenbrunner, 2-minute minor, cross-checking 2:42
Elliott Lugg, 5-minute major, fighting 7:34
STL – Chris Pronger, 5-minute major, fighting 7:34
Keith Tkachuk, 2-minute minor, hooking 13:28

GM Notes:
Why did I rest out #1 goalie? Simple...our next game is against Toronto, who is playing very, very, very well in the East. Toronto is currently 2nd against the east and we don’t want to make a huge mistake by getting our #1 goalie fatigued in the game. I’ve been looking at a few trade prospects this week as well, but none quite fit.
