Disturbed's David Draiman slams The Darkness

The Darkness probably shouldn't count David Draiman as a fan, since the Disturbed lead singer slams the British retro-rockers in the May 2004 issue of Metal Edge magazine. But The Darkness apparently struck first, referring to Disturbed as a symbol of "this whole wave of nu-metal that is near its death."

Draiman said, "I think that the Darkness is a joke, and that's, unfortunately, exactly what the world wants. The world wants rock bands to be idiots. The world wants rock bands to be these bumbling buffoons, these morons who made fun of themselves and their music and their art and don't take themselves seriously in any way...I think that there's always a time to be tongue-in-cheek, and there's always time for humor, but there's a time to be serious and a time for emotional content."

Ironically, the Darkness claim the exact opposite--that they take their music seriously, as frontman Justin Hawkins said. "If you try and pay homage to that era of rock music, in a way, you're kinda just, you're after a lifestyle really, and you end up singing about a lifestyle. There's no substance there. You haven't actually got anything that you're saying or bringing to the table. You're just pretending, you know, sort of. That's kind of one of the pitfalls that some of these other bands who have tried to bring it back have fallen down, you know."

Draiman says that he wouldn't have go after the Darkness if they hadn't spoken out first. "I heard of late that they have decided to start slinging s**t in our direction, that we are an example of one of the bands that they're completely against...I have nothing against them. But don't claim to be something you're not. Don't claim to be metal. Don't claim that you're authentic and we're not...you consider yourselves and you treat yourselves and you conduct yourselves like clowns."

In other Darkness news, the Eighties-style band is reportedly asking for a million British pounds, or more than 1.8 million U.S. dollars, to appear at the prestigious Glastonbury festival this summer. The group got 75 pounds--or about $135--to play an early morning slot at the same show last year.

The Darkness kicks off a U.S. tour on 03.26 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I was unaware of this quote by Hawkins, and frankly, the Darkness can go right up my ass. Disturbed aren't nu-metal. Where's our guy on the decks?! FUCK THE DARKNESS! Proof...if Ozzy Osbourne says you're good...then you are damn good. Where's your Ozzfest appearences, ay Hawkins? That £1,000,000 you want ain't gonna happen, you over-hyped clowns.
